McDuffie Plays Bernstein
Friday, October 4, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.
Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, VBC
Gregory Vajda, conductor
Robert McDuffie, violin
• Brahms: Academic Festival Overture, op. 80
• Bernstein: Serenade (After Plato’s “Symposium”)
• Brahms: Tragic Overture, op. 81, D minor
• Janácek: Sinfonietta, op. 60
Our season begins with two Brahms pieces that were designed to balance each other - one happy and boisterous, the other somber and serious. Bernstein’s Serenade, played by renowned artist Robert McDuffie, was written in praise of love, and Janácek’s Sinfonietta can be described as festive and highly expressive. What different personalities to begin the 59th season!
