Date:

Saturday, February 1, 2014

Description:

Soaring Melodies Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, VBC Gregory Vajda, conductor Alexander Korsantia, piano • Eötvös: The Gliding of the Eagle in the Skies • Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, op. 43 • Sibelius: Symphony No. 5, op. 82, E-flat major If one may describe a personality as “soaring,” it might apply to The Gliding of the Eagle in the Skies, written by Peter Eötvös, Gregory Vajda’s conducting and composition teacher. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5 could be thought of as exhibiting Nordic splendor, while Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini remains an old and familiar friend. Young talented pianist Alexander Korsantia has the personality that brings it all together. Tickets: $27-71 www.hso.org 256-539-4818
