The LVSA Moves On / Friction Stir Welding

Thursday, August 31, 2017

In this segment of The Public Radio Hour (8/31/17), we learn more about a locally-built component of the Space Launch System. The Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter, or LVSA, was manufactured at Marshall Space Flight Center and is ready for a trip down the Mississippi River to the next destination in the production process. The LVSA will connect the SLS's two largest stages ... so this thing is really big. We'll also get a lesson in friction stir welding, a method where metals are mixed, not melted, together ... see a video here
