Ginny Kennedy is WLRH’s morning news anchor and also serves as one of the station’s classical music hosts. WLRH is dedicated to supporting community service and arts in the Tennessee Valley and listeners frequently hear Ginny interview guests from North Alabama and around the world to talk about local issues and upcoming events. Ginny also showed her toughness and dedication in the days following the April 27th tornados when power was knocked out across the entire city of Huntsville and was recognized by National Public Radio for her efforts. This award entry includes samples of interviews, news stories and newscasts and program breaks. No breaks from WLRH’s tornado coverage was included as the station was operating under emergency power and could not record its broadcasts.

WLRH News: Kathryn Remembered for Best Documentary

Kathryn Tucker Windham was one of the South’s first female reporters and a civic leader during violent times of segregation in Selma, Alabama. She was an award-winning photographer and journalist, and the author of more than 30 books, including a beloved series of Southern ghost stories that has haunted generations of children all over the world. In her later years, she became known as a master storyteller and humanitarian. For more than 20 years, her commentaries have aired on WLRH as part of the station’s Sundial Writer’s Corner. Mrs. Windham passed away in the summer of 2011. WLRH listeners gathered at the Huntsville Public Library to share their memories and to preserve their own oral histories as part of WLRH’s Save-A-Story project. The documentary included in this award entry was produced using some of those memories, including a never before told story of how Mrs. Windham helped integrate Selma’s Chamber of Commerce. The documentary drew an extremely positive response from listeners and fans all over the world.

Alabama is rich in water resources with more than 77-thousand miles of streams. Alabama Water Watch, based at Auburn University, is marking 20 years of educating the public about those waterways. One way it does that is by training volunteer groups to take part in a water quality monitoring program. The next training session is November 19th at the Public Services Building in Huntsville. Water Watch director Dr. Bill Deutsch (Doytch) talked with WLRH’s Brett Tannehill about the program. He says one group has been collecting water samples at Lake Guntersville for the past 15 years. Deutsch (Doytch) say those efforts have made a difference in the Lake Guntersville community.
