World Café with David Dye

About the Program:
In 1991, XPN host David Dye and singer songwriter Bruce Cockburn sat down in a small West Philadelphia studio and permanently altered the landscape of public radio. With a few songs and some low-key conversation, they launched what today has become the premier public radio show of its kind – World Café.

“It’s really a thrill for me personally to look back and see what we’ve done,” Dye said. “There are nearly 2,000 interviews in the World Café tape archives. What’s especially rewarding is to walk down the aisle and see all the interviews that have given a voice to so many talented artists whose music might have otherwise gone unheard. I think that’s our greatest achievement.”

Some artists who have been interviewed by Dye on the World Café over the years include Chris Isaak, Joni Mitchell, Dave Matthews, Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Joan Baez, Jewel, and many, many more.

“World Café, in my eyes, has really served as a greenhouse for musical performers,” said Bruce Warren, program director for XPN. “Because of our ability to nurture talent, and give artists a home for their music, we’ve helped artists’ to support themselves by doing what they love.”

Warren said that while some World Café alumni such as Sarah McLachlan, David Gray and Sheryl Crow have become celebrities, others like Bruce Cockburn, may be less well-known but just as important. They have written songs, served as mentors and role models to younger musicians, and helped forge new artistic territory.
