Brass, Reeds, and Percussion; April 25, 2020

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features an original wind-band composition by the Italian composer Armin Kofler, whose name sounds German because he comes from South Tyrol, the most northern of Italian provinces. Because South Tyrol was formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, three languages are spoken there: German, Italian, and Ladin. Born in 1981, Kofler started piano lessons at age 5 and trumpet lessons at age 9. At age 16, he joined the Lengstein Music Association (a local community band), and he is still a member. He is a self-taught composer, with about 40 compositions to his credit. During this edition, we hear his “Melting Giants,” an homage to Alpine glaciers that have been melting. We appreciate the composer’s efforts in furnishing a high-quality recording suitable for broadcast.

This edition also includes “Song for Health” as performed by the Bläserharmonie Forchheim and recorded while members of this German wind band were practicing social distancing; that is, each member of the band played his or her part at home. Jan Corporaal, the bass clarinetest in the band, then paintstakingly combined each track to produce the final product that you hear on today’s show. We appreciate Jan’s efforts in furnishing a high-quality recording suitable for broadcast.
