Radio Reading Service Volunteer Coordinator
(256) 895-9574 Ext.
I was born in Aberdeen, Maryland, (my Dad was called into the US Army and was sent to the Proving Ground there) and have lived here in Huntsville since I was around ten months old.
Having had spinal fusion surgery as a teenager . . . just one of many medical stops along life's roadway . . . I came to understand how hard it is to function without easy access to reading material. Trying to hold a newspaper
while on one's back in a body cast is no simple task. So when I heard about the Radio Reading Service in 1989, I leapt at the chance to help other people avoid the inconvenience I faced "way back then."
I became Volunteer Coordinator in 1990, and am in charge of recruiting, evaluating and assigning volunteers to one-hour weekday slots.
As much as I love my job (and that is saying a lot), I also love my "downtime." I love listening to music of many types, writing poetry and short stories, occasionally working in stained-glass, and surfing the Internet (while trying to convince myself I am NOT addicted ).
Sports is another passion of mine . . . I got into radio to help people and now I dream of calling "the big game."
If I have a motto, it is "When you have something to do, do it the best you can, and be good to people along the way." Corny and old-fashioned it may be. But I truly think the older ways have lasted because they might just WORK. :-)
