Dr. Kenneth W. Noe, a Professor of United States history, expert on the US Civil War, extensively published author, and renowned speaker will engage us with insights into what prompted enlistments and reenlistments in the Confederate States Army after 1861.

The first round of Confederate volunteers joined typically for reasons arising out of fervor for the Southern cause and their state. Similar reasons were found in later rounds of recruits, in 1862 and on through the rest of the war, but many had other motivations. Dr. Noe will spend time with the Tennessee Valley Civil War Round Table on May 10, helping to sort out the various motivations of these second and subsequent waves of recruits to the Rebel cause – who they were, why they enlisted, and what kept them in the ranks. He will unravel various motivators, dispel some myths, and certainly stimulate our thinking when he delves into "Reluctant Rebels: The Confederates Who Joined the Army after 1861."

A practicing professor at Auburn University, Dr. Noe is an award-winning historian, author, and speaker. He has been an active educator since 1979, having held important positions at the University of Illinois, University of West Georgia, and, currently, at Auburn University, among other institutions. He has authored “Perryville: This Grand Havoc of Battle” and “Reluctant Rebels: The Confederates Who Joined the Army after 1861”, as well as edited and co-edited other books. The number of papers and articles he has authored is rivaled only by the long list of awards and professional recognitions he has received over his career. And a truly remarkable career it has been.

Presented by the Tennessee Valley Civil War Round Table, this program will be held Thursday, May 10th, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 725 Franklin St., Huntsville. And don't forget: A scrumptious chicken buffet is available at 5:30 p.m. for $8.95, if you so choose. All are welcome. For more information, phone 256-539-5287.
