Madison, AL (January 3, 2013) – Dr. David Greer, Neurologist and Movement Disorder Specialist associated with Huntsville Hospital, will be the guest speaker at the bi-monthly meeting of the North Alabama Essential Tremor Support Group. The group will meet on Saturday, February 2, at 2:00 p.m. at the Madison Wellness Center, 8391 Hwy 72 W, Madison, Alabama 35758.

Essential tremor (ET) is a neurological condition that affects 10 million Americans. Although it is not a life-threatening condition, it is a life-altering condition that causes rhythmic trembling of the hands, head, legs or voice; frequently impacting every day activities such as eating, drinking and writing. While the severity of the tremor may vary from person to person, it often makes those affected self-conscious or anxious in social situations. Though often confused with Parkinson’s disease, alcohol or drug misuse, or just nervousness, essential tremor frequently runs in families and can manifest at any age, even infancy, though it progresses with age. There is no cure for essential tremor, but medications and coping procedures are available to lessen its impact on one’s lifestyle

The North Alabama Essential Tremor Support Group, affiliated with the International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF), was formed in March, 2012, to offer patients, care-givers, medical personnel, and educators a chance to learn more about causes and coping skills and to share both frustrations and successes of dealing with ET.

We always welcome new members and encourage those who are concerned about a tremor condition to join us. For more information, call Elise H. Hickman at 256-230-2594 or email oxford108@gmail.com.

About The International Essential Tremor Foundation:
Headquartered in Lenexa, KS, and founded in 1988, the International Essential Tremor Foundation is the leading organization in the world dedicated to those affected by essential tremor. The mission of the IETF is to fund research that will find the cause of essential tremor and lead to better treatments and a cure, increase awareness about ET, and provide educational materials, tools and support to healthcare providers, the public, and those directly affected by ET.

The IETF has distributed more than $600,000 in research grants, to fund 24 promising studies, in the search for the cause of ET. The Foundation has hosted numerous community awareness events across the U.S. to provide those affected with the basic knowledge necessary to become their own advocate when seeking treatment. And, the IETF also provides assistance to a vast network of support groups around the world.
