How Henderson Brandon & Son Defied White Supremacy

In 2022, Donna Castellano, Executive Director of Historic Huntsville Foundation discovered something extraordinary while researching the women's suffrage movement in Huntsville. Daniel Brandon, husband of suffragist Ellen Scruggs Brandon and the son of a former enslaved man, Henderson Brandon, was tapped to help rebuild Harrison Brothers Hardware after it burned down in 1901.

Castellano pulled this thread, and found a legacy in the Brandons' Black-owned brick masonry firm, Henderson Brandon and Son.

In this conversation, (a shorter version aired 3/27/23 on our main signal,) we learn about the Brandons, their families, their significant connections to the city of Huntsville and their numerous successes.

You can learn more about the exhibit- another installment of HHF's 'Rooted in History' series- open now through September 18th, 2023, here.

& You can check out Jahni the Artist's work, including his portrait of Henderson & Daniel Brandon, here.
