Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: February 11, 2023 (Loves Songs for Valentine's Day)

In recognition of Valentine’s Day, this edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion airs wind-band arrangements of love songs: happy, sad, yearning, jealous, and unrequited. Today’s edition starts with “Everybody Loves My Baby,” written in 1924 and still performed and recorded nearly 100 years later. Today’s recording is from the sound track of the HBO special Boardwalk Empire and is performed by Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. The music was written by the African-American composer Spencer Williams born in 1899 in Vidalia, Louisiana, right acrosss the riverfrom my home town of Natchez, Mississippi (the beginning of the Natchez Trace); and the lyrics by African-American Jack Palmer also born in 1899, but in Nashville at the other end of the Natchez Trace.
