Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: April 15, 2023

In wind-band music, a transcription is the arrangment of an orchestra work for wind-band. This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features a transcription of the overture to Franz Lehar’s operetta The Land of Smiles. Franz Lehar was an Austro-Hungarian composer, mainly known for his operettas. His most successful and best-known operetta is The Merry Widow. His second most successful and well-known operetta is The Land of Smiles. Born in Hungary to an Austro-Hungarian Army bandmaster, Franz Lehar began his musical career at age 18 as the assistant bandmaster of his father’s military band. But at age 20, he became the bandmaster of his own Austro-Hungarian Army band, making him the youngest bandmaster in the Austro-Hungarian Army at the time.
