This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion showcases French music in recognition of Bastille Day. We open with the march entitled “Le Regiment de Sambre et Meuse.” This march is based on a song created in 1870 when Robert Planquette set a poem by the same title to music. Military bandmaster Joseph-François Rauski converted the tune to a military march. Rauski was the bandmaster of the 18th Infantry Regiment of the French Army. The march was first performed in 1879. The march is very popular in the United States, beging used by the Ohio State University Band and the West Point Army Band, where it is known as the “French National Defilé.”
