Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: August 26, 2023

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion stands for the proposition that band music does not have to be limited to Sousa marches, but is frequently popular music—like the opening composition on this edition: “The St. Louis Blues March.” Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Band is given credit for making the “St. Louis Blues March” a big hit. Listen to the march as heard in the movie The Glenn Miller Story. The movie version does not sound the same as the version broadcast. That’s because the “St. Louis Blues March” didn’t become a big hit because of an Army Air Force Band led by Miller, but by the so-called Miller ghost band headed by Tex Beneke.
