Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: March 25, 2023

Since popular music is often wind-band music, this edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features the original recording of the number-two popular song from March 1962.: “Midnight in Moscow.”

In 1955, Russian composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi wrote a song entitled “Leningrad Nights” At the request of the Soviet Ministry of Culture, the song was renamed “Moscow Nights” and was recorded for use in a documentary about Soviet athletics. The song came to the attention of a Dutch Group knows as the New Orleans Syncopaters, whose leader published an arrangement. A British band then became aware of the song and recorded the arrangement in 1962, but entitled it “Midnight in Moscow.” This recording reached number 2 on the British singles chart in January 1962 and reached the same position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in March 1962.
