Don Gillis was born in Missouri in 1912. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to Fort Worth, Texas. In 1935, he obtained his bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University where he played trombone and was the assistant band director. In 1943, he obtained a master’s degree from North Texas State University. Eventually, he became the producer for the NBC Symphony Orchestra during the tenure of Arturo Toscanini. He was a major American composer during the mid 20th century with 10 orchestral symphonies, several tone poems, piano concertos, and 6 string quartets. He also composed a wide variety of band music.

Born in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1951, John moved to Huntsville in 1975, where he worked for a communications training firm. From 1997 to 2022, John worked for the Lanier Ford law firm. During his tenure, He served as Lanier Ford's law librarian, marketing specialist, trainer, and professional recruiter. While in college and law school, John worked in professional radio in Starkville and Oxford, Mississippi.
