Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: April 26, 2025

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features John Philip Sousa’s first published march from 1873 and wind-band arrangements of Renaissance music by the Belgian composer Thielman Susato, who probably lived from 1510 to 1570 in Antwerp. He was also a music publisher, and the first music publisher to use movable music type. We know he owned a trumpet and a flute and is therefore likely to have played them. He wrote masses, songs, motets, and dance tunes. But his most popular compositions were his settings of the Psalms to popular tunes of the day.
