Harmoniemusik was a popular form of wind-band music from roughly 1775 to 1825. A harmoniemusik typically consisted of two oboes, two clarinets, two horns, and two bassons with either a string bass or a contrabassoon added to strengthen the bass line. In Vienna, harmoniemusik really became popular when Emperor Joseph II established his Empire and Kingdom Harmonie. At first, these groups played arrangements of opera music, but soon original compositions were written for this type of group—as well as arrangements of other works. Today’s edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features an 1810 harmonie arrangement of the Beethoven’s Sonata 8, more frequently called the Sonata Pathetique. This arrangement follows an opening march by Frederick Joseph Rickets.
