Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: June 7, 2025

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features opera music and a big hit from 1941, but opens with a march by the British composer Alfred Young, who lived from 1900 to 1975. He joined the British Army at age 13 and served during World War I in Russia. He first became an military bandmaster in 1927 and eventually became the bandleader of the Royal Engineers Band. During WW II, Young hosted numerous British radio programs featuring band music. Young was born in and grew up in Colchester, England, and today's opening march is entitled "Colchester Castle." Located in Essex and dating from approximately 1101, Colchester Castle not only has the largest keep of any castle in Britain but also in Europe—because its foundation is a Roman temple.
