Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: July 12, 2025

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features trombone music and an interview with Patrick Sullivan of Bone Yard of Brass. On July 18, 2025, this local group will be performing at the International Trombone Festival in London, Ontario, Canada. One of the today’s featured compositions will the Concerto for Trombone and Wind Band composed by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. We’ll also hear some music performed on the sackbut, the predecessor of the modern trombone. And we’ll conclude with a number of compositions featuring the trombone and composed during the heyday of circus bands by a number of circus band composers. We open today’s edition with “Trombone King” by Karl King.

Born in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1951, John moved to Huntsville in 1975, where he worked for a communications training firm. From 1997 to 2022, John worked for the Lanier Ford law firm. During his tenure, He served as Lanier Ford's law librarian, marketing specialist, trainer, and professional recruiter. While in college and law school, John worked in professional radio in Starkville and Oxford, Mississippi.
