Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: July 19, 2025

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion opens with two marches by Harry L. Alford, born in Michigan in 1879. As a boy, he played the trombone, piano, and organ. He was a self-taught composer and arranger. But he studied at the Dana Musical Institute in Warren, Ohio, now part of Youngstown State University. He worked as a church organist and performed with touring minstrel shows, Wild West shows, and theatrical groups. In 1903, Alford, when tired of traveling, organized his own free-lance arranging bureau in Chicago, a novel idea at that time. He arranged and orchestrated the music of many of America's leading popular composers and songwriters and ultimately became famous for his marches. We open today’s edition with his most famous: “The Purple Carnival.”
