Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: August 16, 2025

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features original classical wind-band music by the Polish-Austrian composer with an Italian last name: Antonio Casimir Cartellieri. Cartellieri was born in Danzig (now called Gdansk), Poland, in 1772. His parents were both opera singers, his father being Italian. In 1785, his parents divorced; and Cartellieri moved with his mother to Berlin, where he began studying music composition. In 1791, at the age of 18, he became the court composer and music director for Michal Kazimierz Oginski, a Polish nobleman. In 1793, he returned to Berlin with Oginski, and Cartellieri”s first opera premiered there successfully. He then accompanied Oginski to Vienna, where Cartellieri studied with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger. In 1796, he became the court music director for Prince Joseph Lobkowicz of Bohemia, a role he held until he died in 1807.
