Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: September 6, 2025

The Swedish equivalent to the American Fort Knox was the Boden Fortress located in the northeast corner of Sweden about 12 miles from the Gulf of Bothnia, the body of water that separates Sweden from Finland. Mostly completed by 1908, the fortress was originally built to protect Sweden from invasion by Russia by way of Finland. So it should come as no surprise that Viktor Widqvist, the Swedish Army’s bandmaster stationed there, wrote a march for the Boden Engineer Regiment. Vidqvist learned to play the violin and tuba when he was a child. He joined a Swedish military band at age 17, in which he played both the tuba and flute. Today’s edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion opens with Viktor Widqvist’s “Boden Engineer Regiment March” performed by the Royal Swedish Army Band.
