This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion opens with two marches by Joseph Gungl, a Hungarian composer, bandmaster, and conductor. He played oboe in an Austro-Hungarian army band and served as bandmaster of at least two such bands. He composed 436 dances during his lifetime. Franz Liszt arranged the first march for piano and often performed it. The second march, composed in 1863, was named after Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant—probably because Gungl had toured the United States with his band. Gungl also held concerts at Covent Garden in London.
