A congressional committee has sent former Attorney General Jeff Sessions a subpoena to be deposed later this month as part of its investigation into the Jeffrey Epstein case. The longtime Alabama senator served as attorney general for part of President Donald Trump’s first term. AL.com reports Sessions was ordered to provide a deposition because, according to the House Oversight and Governmental Reform Committee, his tenure intersected with key moments in the Justice Department’s investigation and case against Epstein.
Mountain Gap Middle School is mourning the loss of one of its students. Eighth grader Kallel Fox was hit and killed while riding a bike after his second day of school on Tuesday. The accident occurred at the intersection at Bailey Cove Road and Green Mountain Road near St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Jeanne Randall, a deacon at St. Thomas, tells WHNT TV some of their parishioners in the past few years have been hit as they’re pulling out of the church parking lot. She notes that a few years ago, the city put in a light at the intersection, and it has helped decrease the number of accidents. Huntsville police are asking people to make sure they stay aware while driving and remember to share the road with bikers.
Kimberly Robinson is retiring as executive director and CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center after serving since February 2021. Robinson, who had been on leave since June, led the center through post-pandemic recovery and launched a $65 million capital campaign. AL.com reports CFO Brenda Perez will continue as interim CEO until a replacement is found through a nationwide search.
New findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show vaccine coverage among kindergartners nationwide is down, but that’s not the case in Alabama. The latest numbers are from the 2024-2025 school year. They show nationwide, only about 92% of incoming kindergartners got all their vaccines while more than 95% were fully vaccinated in Alabama. WBRC TV in Birmingham notes that’s the highest in over a decade.
Smaller to mid-sized cities continue to attract Americans in 2025, according to a new report from moving trends website moveBuddha. Based on search data from their Moving Cost Calculator, moveBuddha identified the top cities in each state that people are likely to move to this year. Huntsville came in at number six on the list. The website notes that Huntsvillei s one of the fastest growing cities in Alabama. AL.com reports Johnson City, in East Tennessee is at the top of the list. It leads the nation with nearly four people moving in for every person moving out.
The Alabama Big 10 Mayors kicked off its annual statewide photo competition this week. Alabamians who submit their photos from the state’s ten biggest cities could receive a cash prize. Alabama Political Reporter says participants can submit entries until September 2, with voting to conclude on September 9. You can submit your photos via direct message to the Alabama Big 10 Mayors Facebook page. The photo that receives the most likes wins a $500 Visa gift card and recognition from the Alabama Big 10 Mayors’ platform. Cities included in the Alabama Big 10 Mayors organization are Auburn, Birmingham, Decatur, Dothan, Hoover, Huntsville, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa.
The state program formerly known as the Alabama Film Office has officially taken on a new name, signaling an expanded focus that includes film, television and now music. The Alabama Film Office is now the Alabama Entertainment Office. Bama Buzz reports the state hopes the expansion of the already popular film office will show its dedication to building a creative economy. The updated incentive structure for the Alabama Entertainment Office raises the annual cap to $22 million beginning in Fiscal 2026, with $2 million specifically reserved for recorded music.
