The Huntsville Police Department has announced plans for a new South Precinct facility. Huntsville Blast reports the Huntsville City Council approved the purchase of the property for the new precinct during its meeting last week. The property is located south of the Logan Drive and Commerce Parkway intersection, behind the Kroger shopping center and just south of Community Fellowship Baptist Church.
The nation’s largest public utility plans to buy power from an upcoming advanced nuclear plant to help fuel Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. According to a deal announced Monday, the Tennessee Valley Authority, California-based Kairos Power and Google will deliver up to 50 megawatts of energy to the federal utility’s grid that powers the data centers. TVA says it is the first U.S. utility to sign a power purchase agreement to buy electricity from a next-generation nuclear reactor. AL.com reports it would rely on the Hermes 2 reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2030. The agreement will power data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama, and support future growth in the region.
HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is facing the loss of millions of dollars in federal funding due to a shift in priorities by the Trump Administration. HudsonAlpha President Neil Lamb tells AL.com just how much of a loss remains to be seen. Lamb says he believes the funding gap is a temporary one. He said much of the research at the institute – from efforts to put off the onset of Alzheimer’s to efforts to protect crops from drought and disease – aligns with administration priorities.
Huntsville International Airport broke its all-time travelers record for the third month in a row. WAFF TV reports the airport welcomed more than 168,000 travelers in July. That’s up almost ten thousand from the month before and up 17 percent from July of last year. Leaders at the airport attribute the surge to summer travel and to the changes the airport has made over the past year. Recently, the airport added Allegiant Air, offering new non-stop flights, as well as more non-stop locations like New York City.
Ahead of the August 26, 2025 municipal elections across Alabama, the League of Women Voters of Alabama has launched the nonpartisan election resource Vote411.org/LWVAL for voters in 100 cities. A news item from the League of Women Voters says VOTE411 provides candidate information, voter registration details, links to polling place locations, and other helpful election information for all voters in Alabama and nationwide. The list of cities covered by Vote411 in North Alabama includes Albertville, Athens, Cullman, Decatur, Fort Payne, Guntersville and Madison.
U. S. News & World Report has released its latest rankings of the best high schools in each state. They used ranking indicators based on college readiness, state test scores, underserved student performance and graduation rates. Three area school made the top ten in the state. Coming in at number 3 was Huntsville’s New Century Tech High School. Madison’s James Clemens High School was ranked eighth and Bob Jones High School was tenth on the list.
Huntsville Parks & Recreation has released its 2025 Fall Program Guide. It features more than 100 free activities, workshops and special events for all ages. Participants can join walking groups, dance fitness classes and play basketball, volleyball, pickleball or table tennis. There’s also a Chess Club and Senior Bingo.
